What’s on your mind?

Start with your situation. Get clear on your options before making a decision.

A little understanding goes a long way.

The essentials, without the insurance vocabulary lesson.

Life insurance can help while you’re living.

Some policies let you access part of the death benefit after a qualifying illness. That money can help with household expenses while you focus on recovery.

What to check

It’s not automatic coverage for every illness. Using living benefits generally reduces the amount left to beneficiaries. Eligibility and costs depend on the policy.

The person behind the guidance

He’s been on both
sides of a claim.

When cancer struck in 2009, Jeff accessed living benefits from his own life insurance. When it returned in 2023, he used them again.

That experience shapes the questions he asks today: What does your policy cover? What does it exclude? And will it work the way you expect?

  1. Bring your question.

Your family’s coverage, an old 401(k), or simply where to start.

  2. Look at the whole picture.

Review what you have, what you need, and the trade-offs of your options.

  3. Decide with understanding.

Know what a recommendation means before you choose whether to act.

Ask Jeff a question
I already have insurance through work. Is that enough?

Start with what it covers, how much it pays, and what happens when you leave your job. Then compare that with the income your family depends on. Having a policy and having enough protection are different questions.

Check your coverage
Do all life insurance policies include living benefits?

No. Benefits depend on the policy and its riders. A qualifying terminal, chronic, or critical illness may allow you to access part of the death benefit early. Eligibility, costs, and the amount available vary. Using a benefit generally reduces what remains for beneficiaries.

Does an old 401(k) have to move into an annuity?

No. Depending on plan rules, you may leave it where it is, move it to a new employer’s plan, or roll it to an IRA. An annuity is one possible insurance product, with its own costs and withdrawal limits. Compare the alternatives before moving money.
